2014 Chardonnay

2014 may be remembered as one of the most challenging vintages to date; frost in late Spring & unsettled conditions over flowering resulted in low fruit set and a modest crop.
What followed was our hottest & driest Summer on record, followed by our wettest Autumn on record.

The result was a tiny, precious and excellent crop of Chardonnay from our oldest vines who weathered the extremes remarkably well. This is a more restrained wine than the 2013 - more delicate and aromatic and with more vibrant acid. As has become our house style, it was fermented in french oak using native (or wild) yeast. We use a small amount of new oak to add sweetness and spice, without dominating the wine.

This vintage will cellar gradually, deepening in colour, complexity and richness over many years to come.

Biodynamic. Wild yeast fermentation in French oak (a small amount new) and 9 months maturation on lees has worked very well, the varietal fruit expression is mouthwateringly intense and persistent, the softening effect of prolonged lees contact barely perceptible; the length of the palate excellent.

Quite ripe smelling into the melon and peach spectrum, with perfumed aromatic white musk too. The palate’s ripe and luscious to start out, acidity chisels it into focus. Nice and crisp, plenty of crunchy peach and melon flavor, gently nutty finish. Drink now.
