LARK HILL VINEYARD WINES
Lark Hill Vineyard was planted by founders David & Susan Carpenter in 1978. Their passion began with cool climate wines of Germany and France and so Riesling, Chardonnay & Pinot Noir were the logical first choices.
Lark Hill Vineyard is high on the Lake George Escarpment, from 860-880 meters elevation, overlooking the village of Bungendore. Ancient soils (350-450 million years old) are heavy in clays and shale, with quartz reefs adding minerality to the wines.
In 2005, Lark Hill planted the first Gruner Veltliner vines in Australia here, adding a 4th variety to this high alitude site, and a new variety to the Australian market.
Certified Biodynamic from 2006.
The slow and late vintage at Lark Hill produces an intense and aromatic Riesling with vibrant lime, green apple and mineral notes underscored by zesty acidity.
Our delicious dry Rieslings evolve beautifullly over the years, retaining freshness and balance.
The Riesling vines were our first plantings in 1978, high on the Lake George escarpment, 30km from Canberra , and 38 rewarding vintages have amply demonstrated the match of this great variety to our site.

Vintage 2017 was a treat; lots of soil moisture, a steady Summer and a cool, long Autumn. The vines revelled in this luxury, producing an abundance of stunning fruit with great balance and vibrance.
The juice was fermented using native yeasts in older french oak barrels (7+ years) to give funkiness, texture and build complexity, without imparting oak character.
As a young wine this shows exotic melon and fig aromas, a light and taut palate and a hint of texture to match with food. It will continue to improve over some years, gaining depth, complexity and the typical Gruner-driven spice characters of white pepper, parsnip and fresh herbs.

Since 1980 Chardonnay has thrived in our high and cool site, producing fruit with a fine balance of ripeness and natural acidity. Our wines are wild yeast fermented in French oak barrels and held on yeast lees for nine months to add creamy complexity. Some new oak introduces spice and texture to these grapefruit and melon characters of this traditional style which remains poised and restrained, gaining weight and complexity with bottle age.

Our search for a cool site in 1978 took us to the top of the escarpment above Lake George. Here, at 860m, the Pinot Noir ripens slowly in the Autumn sun, building aromas and flavours of dark cherry, game and woodland. We planted MV6, traceable to the Busby introductions of 1933, and more recently the Dijon-115 Clone. We use traditional and modern techniques, whole bunches and pigeage. The Pinot Noir is fermented with the wild yeasts that abound in our Biodynamic vineyard and age the wine in a mix of new and seasoned French oak to produce a savoury style with finesse and structure.
This classic Sparkling was made in the traditional method from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and fermented in this bottle. Extended lees aging give richness, power and a long creamy palate despite clean and refreshing acidity.
